Meet Luundo, a 28-year-old Congolese refugee residing in Kakuma 1. Luundo’s journey from being a refugee to an entrepreneur is not just about personal success but also about community impact and empowerment.

Luundo’s story began in 2016 when political conflict in his home country of Congo forced him to flee for his safety. Like many other youths, Luundo found himself seeking refuge in Kakuma Refugee Camp, hoping to find stability and opportunities for a better future.

Pursuing Education Amidst Challenges

Initially, Luundo's aspiration was to pursue higher education and enroll in university. However, financial constraints prevented him from realizing this dream. Undeterred by setbacks, Luundo remained resilient and resourceful, seeking alternative paths to self-sufficiency and community support.

The Birth of an Idea: Fish Farming

In 2018, Luundo conceptualized the idea of fish farming as a means to generate income and contribute to his community. Teaming up with approximately 40 other youths, he initiated a fish farming business aimed at providing sustainable employment and nutritional support to the residents of Kakuma.

Despite not fulfilling his original plan of attending university, Luundo’s fish farming venture has had a significant impact on the community. By providing locally reared fish, he addresses the nutritional needs of Kakuma and Kalobeyei camp residents, reducing their dependency on external sources.

 Future Goals and Expansion

Luundo's vision extends beyond his initial fish farming project. With the support of the community, NGOs, and stakeholders, he aims to expand his initiative to other parts of the camps. By bridging gaps in access to nutritious food and creating employment opportunities, Luundo and his team continue to empower and uplift their community.

Luundo’s journey from refugee to entrepreneur exemplifies resilience, innovation, and community spirit. Through his fish farming initiative, he not only sustains himself but also makes a meaningful impact on the lives of others in Kakuma. His story is a testament to the transformative power of entrepreneurship in refugee communities.
